A one-hour documentary about the making of the Metallica album entitled ‘Metallica’ but now referred to as ‘The Black Album’. The album that changed the headlines to capacity stadium fillers on a global scale. The album charted at Number 1 in the US Billboard charts upon its release, won the Grammy Award for Best heavy Metal Album and has subsequently sol 20 million copies.
Following the tour for their Justice album the band felt it was time to do something different. Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield flew up to Vancouver to meet the Canadian Producer Bob Rock. After playing him the demos for the songs Bob came on board and of the first time the band allowed a new creative force into their tightly nit camp.
The programme takes a track-by-track look at the making of the album. In Los Angeles Bob Rock (Producer), Lars Ulrich (Drums), James Hetfield (Guitar/Vocals). Kirk Hammed (Lead Guitar) and Jason Nested (Bass) lead us through the original multi-tracks of ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘Sad But True’, ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Wherever I May Roam’ and ‘Nothing Else Matters’. Kirk and Jason demonstrate guitar parts and the Band perform new versions of songs. Michael Kamen (composer/artist/arranger) demonstrates and discussed his orchestrations on ‘Nothing Else Matters’. Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke explains why ‘Metallica’ had become a landmark Heavy Metal album.
The programme is illustrated by archive footage from Metallica in concert, on video and with rare live performances and is the compelling story of the making of one of the biggest selling Heavy Metal albums of all time.
